Formula 1 Betting By Numbers
As there's a three week gap between Montreal and Silverstone that's meant more time for me to analyse some of the various formula 1 betting markets, and therefore today I'm going to take a look at some of the betting markets I don't always get a chance to cover, such as fastest lap, fastest qualifier, etc.
As you'll see, it's worth looking beyond the Winning Driver market as there are profits to be made in some of the other formula 1 betting markets...
Fastest Lap:
First of all, here's the 'Betting Profit' chart for the fastest lap market:Fastest Lap | Profit* | Winning Bet |
Esteban Gutierrez | 94.00 | 1 |
Sergio Perez | 14.00 | 1 |
Sebastian Vettel | 5.08 | 3 |
Mark Webber | 5.00 | 1 |
Kimi Raikkonen | 3.00 | 1 |
Rest Of The Field | -7.00 | 0 |
* The 'Profit' column shows the amount of profit you would have made if you'd placed a £1 bet on the same driver at each Grand Prix of 2013. Please note, even in the few days before first practise, the odds can sometimes vary slightly, so I've generally tried to take the odds a few days before each Grand Prix as soon as the market opened on SkyBet.
Esteban Gutierrez heads the table with a huge £94 profit due to his fastest lap at Barcelona where he was available at a massive 100/1! Obviously fastest lap can be an unpredictable market, so if you fancy a speculative bet on formula 1 then this is perhaps one market definitely worth considering.
If you're after a safer bet though, then Sebastian Vettel is the bet to go for with 3 fastest laps from 7 Grand Prix. Vettel seems to regard 'fastest lap' as a badge of honour and once a race victory is looking safe he'll often put in a series of unnecessarily fast laps during the closing stages. There are no points to be won for fastest lap of course, and it's therefore not unknown for Vettel's team to tell him over the radio to concentrate on bringing the car home safely.
Fastest Qualifier:
Next up is the 'Betting Profit' chart for 'Pole Position' or 'Fastest Q3 Qualifying Time' as some bookies refer to it:Fastest Qualifier | Profit | Winning Bet |
Nico Rosberg | 16.00 | 3 |
Sebastian Vettel | 2.45 | 3 |
Lewis Hamilton | 0.50 | 1 |
Rest Of The Field | -7.00 | 0 |
As you can see, only three drivers have been on pole this year, and although Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel are tied on three pole positions each, Rosberg leads the chart on account of the more generous odds available on him earlier in the season. Since Monaco the bookies have cottoned on to Rosberg's qualifying form and reduced his odds accordingly, but he's perhaps still worth a look when we head to Silverstone.
Winning Margin:
Most bookies also offer a market on the Winning Margin of each Grand Prix and at SkyBet they go with 6 seconds as the dividing line:Winning Margin | Profit | Winning Bet |
6 seconds or more | 1.95 | 5 |
Under 6 seconds | -3.64 | 2 |
Sebastian Vettel's victory at Canada by 14.4 seconds was the biggest winning margin we've seen so far this season, and we're yet to see a really nail-biting finish, with only Malaysia and Monaco producing a winning margin of under 6 seconds.
Safety Car:
Betting on the Safety Car is probably something that few formula 1 fans bother with, but 2013 has seen a definite trend and it's therefore worth a look:Safety Car | Profit | Winning Bet |
No | 5.79 | 6 |
Yes | -5.83 | 1 |
Only Monaco has seen safety car driver Bernd Maylander called into action, so it's worth considering a bet on there being no safety car at the British Grand Prix, despite the probable short odds on offer.
Winning Team:
Finally, here's the 'Betting Profit' chart for Winning Team:Winning Team | Profit | Winning Bet |
Red Bull | 1.63 | 3 |
Ferrari | 0.25 | 2 |
Lotus | -1.00 | 1 |
Mercedes | -5.20 | 1 |
Rest Of The Field | -7.00 | 0 |
This has been a tricky market to make significant returns from, due to the fact that the bookies have usually got it right, so it's probably wise to avoid looking beyond the favourites if you fancy a bet on the winning team at the British Grand Prix.
